As a fourth-generation Christian with pastors in my family tree, I have witnessed the transformative power of faith and leadership throughout my life. What intrigued me the most was how leaders either adapted or resisted change as they grew older. After careful observation, I realized that those who maintained their strength as leaders were the ones who nurtured a deep, intimate relationship with God. Intimacy with God is essential for young leaders to understand how it sets the foundation for their leadership journey.

Embracing Change

It is a common observation that as people grow older, they tend to become more rigid and resistant to change. Life experiences solidify existing beliefs and leave less room for adaptation. Unfortunately, many leaders succumb to this pattern, their once-great leadership diminishing as they fail to adapt to the changing times of the changing next generations. However, there is a stark contrast when it comes to leaders who embrace change and continue to thrive. These individuals possess an intimate relationship with God.

The Path to Intimacy

Intimacy with God is not developed overnight but evolves as we walk hand-in-hand with Him. It requires committing ourselves to a daily relationship with Christ. Leaders who prioritize prayer, listening to God, and meditating on His word are the ones who understand the importance of this intimate connection. They recognize that rushing this process leads to shallow relationships, while investing time and effort reaps rewards beyond measure.

The Role of Intimacy in Transformation

In our sacred relationship with God, He lovingly guides and molds us. By knowing God and trusting Him, we open ourselves to His transformative power. Good leaders willingly allow God to work within them, demonstrating complete obedience because they have experienced firsthand God's trustworthiness and goodness. This surrender to God's plan is what sets them apart and enables them to become strong and effective leaders.

The Challenge for Young Leaders

Many young leaders in Christian ministries, churches, and workplaces find themselves caught up in the busyness of their work. Focused on their careers and the desire to make a difference, they often unintentionally sacrifice their intimacy with God. Although their dedication is commendable, it is crucial to remember that our worth in Christ is not solely defined by our accomplishments. When our work eventually comes to an end or unexpected circumstances arise, our true worth lies in our intimate connection with God. Your profession, work, and ministry can be quite captivating and fulfilling in their own right. However, there’s a potential pitfall; you might start identifying yourself with your achievements, rather than seeing yourself through God’s perspective.

The Unfading Importance of Intimacy

While accomplishments and career success may provide temporary satisfaction, they are fleeting in nature. In contrast, intimacy with God is everlasting. As a young leader, it is natural to be driven by tasks, projects, and professional achievements, but we must never compromise our intimacy with God for these pursuits. It is imperative to remember that what endures is our relationship with Him, which will continue to shape and guide us throughout our leadership journey.

Conclusion
As young leaders, it is crucial to recognize the paramount importance of intimacy with God in our leadership endeavors. While our work and achievements may bring momentary fulfilment, they pale in comparison to the everlasting significance of our relationship with God. By prioritizing our intimacy with Him, we can navigate the challenges of leadership with wisdom, strength, and an unwavering sense of purpose. May we never lose sight of this essential truth as we continue to serve and lead in our various spheres of influence.

In Christ, there is no room for confusion or cloudy vision, and when faced with an increasingly uncertain world, leaders must prioritize Christ-like clarity. The faster things change, the more valuable clarity becomes. Take a definitive direction, create clarity around it, and remain adaptable. Just like a bicycle cannot be steered when stationary, progress requires movement.
